According to the country’s National Retail Association, in only three months, Australia has cut its plastic bag usage by 80 percent.

Plastic bags are everywhere these days, for any reason. They are cheap, and in many cases, they may be a washout, easy way to carry your goods, they are wreaking havoc on the planet in a number of ways.

After two big players’ decision, the environment was spared some 1.5 billion plastic shopping bags in under 100 days.

Woolworths began prohibiting all single-use plastic bags from all stores nationwide on June 20th, according to The Guardian, and long after their competitor, Coles, did the same on June 30th. Each chain contributed to around 3.2 billion bags per year.

This sharp turn around is largely thanks to two of the largest supermarket chains, Coles and Woolworths.
