There’s a reason why we call him man’s best friend – this brave, loyal pitbull rescued his owner from attack by a shark and proved that!
As NBC Bay Area News reported on August 15th, James White was fishing off the shore of Bodega Bay in Sonoma County, California when he was attacked by a shark.
White left Darby, his 1-year-old 100 pounds pitbull, in his car parked a few yards away.
After a while, White felt something big on the end of his rod, White realized he had hooked a 6-foot shark. White tried hard, but he couldn’t get the shark to release. Even worse, the shark managed to grab a hold of White’s ankle and puncturing an artery.
“The only way I think I was able to get the line back is because it was swimming towards me,” he told NBC Bay Area.
“Immediately there was blood everywhere, the first bite punctured an artery,” he said. “The pressure was intense.”
White shouted out to a fisherman, who was a few hundred yards away. Darby hearing that his best friend was in trouble, the incredibly brave and clever pitbull somehow was able to open one of the car doors and ran over to the shore, to rescue White.
Darby bit into one of the shark’s gills, which initially led the shark to bite down harder on White’s leg. Realizing that this is not working, the dog then grabbed the shark by the tail and pulled it off White’s leg.
“There was blood everywhere,” White said. “The first bite punctured the artery, and that’s when I knew this wasn’t just going to be a couple of scratches. This is bad.”
White tossed the shark back into the water and watched it swim away. Darby surely saved White’s leg from more damage!
White considers the young dog Darby to be extraordinarily bright and articulate and indicates how this was reflected in his heroic deed. He’s happy he’s fit enough to be a capable hero like that.
“If it wasn’t for him I would have been a lot worse,” White said.
